Insulation Class (IP Codes)

Insulation classes are used to indicate the level of protection of electrical products from external loads caused by accidental contact, humidity or dust. The insulation class is indicated by 2 digits.

Level of Protection from Accidental Contact and Foreign Matter (1st digit)

1 Protection from large body parts of 50 mm diameter large foreign objects (diameter 50 mm or more)
2 Finger protection (diameter 12 mm) medium-size foreign objects (diameter 12.5 mm or more, length up to 80 mm)
3 Tools and wires (diameter 2.5 mm or more) small foreign objects (diameter 2.5 mm or more)
4 Tools and wires (diameter 1 mm or more) granular foreign objects (diameter 1 mm or more)
5(K) Wire protection (as IP 4) dustproof Dust deposits
6(K) Wire protection (as IP 4) dustproof no dust ingress

1 Protection from vertically dripping water
2 Protection from diagonally dripping water (up to 15°)
3 Protection from water spray at up to 60° from vertical
4 Protection from all-round water spray
4k Protection from all-round water spray at high pressure, applies to road vehicles only
5 Protection from water jets at any angle
6 Protection from streaming water (flooding)
6k Protection from streaming water at high pressure (flooding), applies to road vehicles only
7 Protection from temporary submersion
8 Protection from continuous submersion
9k Protection from water at high pressure / steam cleaning jets, applies to road vehicles only
